Case Study: Skylights and Glazing at a DC Public Library

How CBE Glass installed new skylights, roof glazing, louvers and interior glass guards during the renovation of a DC Public Library branch in Washington DC.

Case Study: Skylights and Glazing at a DC Public Library

Public libraries are some of the most demanding projects for a glazing contractor: public safety, strict codes, renovation of an existing building and a strong design intent to bring daylight inside. Here is how our team approached the glazing work on a DC Public Library renovation in Washington, DC.

The scope

  • New glass skylights and roof glazing over the main spaces
  • Exterior aluminum louvers
  • Interior glass guardrails at stairs and openings

Challenge: working on an occupied site and a roof

Large laminated skylight panels had to be lifted to the roof by crane, then set into the framing by hand. Our crews planned each lift with the general contractor, staged material carefully and worked with fall protection on the roof.

Handling large laminated glass

Overhead glazing must be laminated so that broken glass stays in place. These heavy panels were moved with vacuum lifters and positioned with precision so the gaskets and seals would perform. Each joint was sealed and inspected to keep the roof watertight.

Interior glass guards

Inside, frameless glass guards protect stairs and openings without blocking sightlines. The panels were set level and plumb on site with code-compliant hardware.

The result

Natural light now pours into the reading rooms through the new skylights, while the interior glass keeps the spaces open and safe. Explore the project gallery and learn more about our skylight services and work for schools and public buildings.
