Window film is one of the fastest ways to improve existing glass without replacing it. But “window film” covers very different products. Here is how to choose.
Security and safety film
Thick, clear polyester films bond to the glass and hold fragments together when broken. They slow down smash-and-grab burglaries and reduce injuries from flying glass.
- Good for: storefronts, ground-floor offices, schools, pharmacies.
- Tip: for best performance, films can be anchored to the frame with an attachment system.
Privacy and decorative film
Frosted, gradient, patterned or printed films provide privacy while letting light through. They are ideal for conference rooms, medical offices and glass office partitions, and can include your logo or branding.
Solar control film
Spectrally selective and reflective films reduce heat gain, glare and UV radiation that fades merchandise and furniture. They can improve comfort on hot west and south elevations.
Anti-graffiti film
A sacrificial clear layer protects storefront glass from scratching and etching. When vandalized, the film is replaced instead of the glass.
Things to check before installing film
- Glass type: some films are not recommended on certain insulated or heat-strengthened units because of thermal stress.
- Warranty: confirm the film and the glass warranties remain valid.
- Building rules: landlords or historic districts may restrict reflective films.
