Project overview

DC Public Library Renovation

On the renovation of a DC Public Library branch, CBE Glass installed new glass skylights and roof glazing, exterior louvers and interior glass guardrails. Crane lifts, rooftop work and the handling of large laminated panels with vacuum lifters were part of daily operations. The project combines a brick building with modern glass that fills the reading rooms with daylight.

The challenge

Schools and public buildings must meet demanding codes for safety glazing and energy performance, and work often has to be scheduled around school calendars and public access.

Our solution

Working from detailed shop drawings, we fabricated and installed the overhead glazing with laminated safety glass and careful flashing for a watertight result. Each glass guard and railing panel was set level and plumb with code-compliant fittings, delivering safety without blocking light or views. Our crews installed the curtain wall and window wall framing, set insulated low-E glass units and sealed the perimeter to tie into the building's air and water barrier. Throughout the job, our team coordinated closely with the general contractor and the owner, kept the site clean and safe, and protected finished surfaces until turnover.

The result

Daylight now fills classrooms and reading rooms, while robust glazing and entrances stand up to heavy everyday use. Discover more of our work in Washington, DC.
